Equipment Needed:
6' Leather Lead
Training Collar
Explanation and Goal of Exercise: This method of molding the dog into position, teaches the dog to allow our hands to mold and manipulate various parts of their body. The handler is also teaching themselves how to determine if a dog's muscles are relaxed with trust OR tense with distrust. Additionally, it is possible to detect a physical problem by touch as you mold your dog down. This also ready's your dog to sink into a sit readily when given the correction later on (if the correction is even necessary).
Hand Drills (practice until your moves can move swiftly through the motions without the handler needing to think about it, before practicing with the dog):

Hand Drills (practice until your moves can move swiftly through the motions without the handler needing to think about it, before practicing with the dog):
- Practice these without the dog for a few minutes prior to starting.
- Your left hand will hold leash, transfer to your right hand (grasp near snap bolt on collar), left hand does long stroke down dog's (first few minutes your invisible dog) back, the left hand cups the bum area, right hand gives pressure up on collar.
- At the end of heeling, be sure to introduce your "release word". Some people use "break", "free" or "okay" to indicate that the work is ended. One note about "okay" it is used frequently in conversation, so if you use it, you are going to need to train that it only comes from you and when you are looking at them.
- Only start with your dog once your muscle memory kicks on on this procedure.
- Start with the hand drill. However do it with six inches of leash. Could be a little more or less depending on the height of the dog.
- When you position your left foot and give the command "sit", give the leash a straight jerk up if they are not sitting by the time your right foot closes. Be sure to maintain upward pressure until the dog is sitting.
- If the dog did sit, praise your dog. Remember though that your dog should not release the command until the release command is given OR another direction is given.
- STEP 1: Give the command "sit".
- STEP 2A: Remember the rule for correct performance when you are heeling is that the dog is sitting by the time your feet close back up. Correct performance in random commands is that the dog sits 1-2 seconds after you give the command.
- STEP 2B: If the dog does not sit, [stim] [stim]...until the dog is sitting (then stop immediately, be careful on timing on this so that you don't correct while he is going into the sit, but also don't stop so soon that he is in a crouch or bounces back up). The collar should be on working level so that the dog is not distressed by the stim. Walking towards the dog often puts them into the sit. If the dog is not sitting after a few taps and you walking into them, then you can help them by molding them.
- STEP 2C: Alternate way to use the e-collar depending on what works best for the dog is to use [constant] if the dog does not sit as directed. Be sure to let loose the stim the moment the dog reaches position. Timing is necessary because if you stop too soon, the dog may get back up or remain in a crouch position.
- STEP 3: Once in position, wait for at least 30 seconds before going to them and praising them.
- STEP 4: Remember a command only ends with a release word or another command.
How to Practice Patterns:
- Days 1 thru 2, sits molding into position only (no command). 100 sits per day.
- Days 3 thru 4, now you will verbalize sit, and still help will molding. Also still accomplishing 100 sits per day. Note that this was done wrong on my part, I shouldn't have said sit until her bum hit the ground, but crying puppy and video distracting me a bit.
- Days 5 thru 7, use the sit correction should your dog NOT sit after you verbalize the command. 100 sits per day. (Random sits started inside and outside if using the e-collar)
